Bill was born in Pontiac, Illinois in 1950 and is a graduate of Pontiac
High School. He received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Northern Illinois University in 1973
and a Master of Fine Arts degree from Penn State in 1976. During the summers while going to school
he worked as an apprentice carpenter for his grandfather's construction company in Pontiac and for
various painting contractors. After his undergraduate education he worked for Turner Corporation
in Sycamore, Illinois where he became the chief draftsman and packaging designer. After receiving
his graduate degree he started his first business, Diaz-Chariere Painting in State College,
Pennsylvania. His partner bought him out and he moved back to Illinois where he worked briefly in
freelance commercial art in the Chicago area.
Bill moved home to Pontiac and worked for the Pontiac Chair Company and
Sullivan Construction in the late 70's before starting Diaz Painting and Decorating in 1979. He
names his mentors as his father, William L. Diaz, and mother, Virginia Whitley; Al Heinrichs of
Pontiac Painting and Decorating and the many fine craftsman who worked over the years at McCoy
Construction of Pontiac, Illinois. His work has appeared in Signcraft, Sign of the Times, Sign
Builders, Sign Business and Letterheads magazines. Bill has recently retired from coaching for the
Pontiac Chiefs JFL Youth Football program and helping with the Vermillion Players' Children's
productions sets in the summer. In his spare time, Bill likes to brew his own beer, play guitar and
follow sporting events.
